Forearm along the upper back. Slower than a light hour, and priced the same as one.

Deep tissue at Diamond Massage is the body massage, worked firmer. Sixty minutes is $60, ninety is $90, and there's no second booking to make, no separate line on the menu and no surcharge for pressure. We're at 10646 W Central Ave #106 in west Wichita, just west of Maize Rd on the north side of Central, open seven days, and you can walk in.

How much is a deep tissue massage in Wichita?

$60 for the hour here. Across the Wichita studios that print a deep-tissue rate at all it runs from $70 to $130, and where a studio lands has more to do with whether it's a day spa than with how firm the hands are. You book the Body Massage and say what you want at the start — firm all over, or as deep as you can go on the right shoulder and easy everywhere else. Same therapist, same room, same number on the receipt as our lightest hour.

Pricing

Body Massage

Deep tissue, firm pressure and light relaxation all book here. Tell the therapist which you want when you get on the table, and change your mind whenever you like.

  • 30 minutes $40
  • 60 minutes $60
  • 90 minutes $90
  • 120 minutes $120

Prices in USD, mirroring our Square booking page. Cupping adds $20, salt stone $20, aromatherapy $10.

Why pressure doesn't change the price

Firmer work doesn't need longer, a different room or a different therapist, so we don't bill it apart from the rest. Plenty of places do. Beau Monde West Spa publishes $120 for a relaxing hour, $125 for firm and $130 for deep tissue — three prices for the same sixty minutes, sorted by how hard you want it. Nothing wrong with running a menu that way. We'd rather you switch to a bit deeper on that side at minute twenty without anybody doing arithmetic.

What the other west-side studios publish

Under Pressure, over on W Maple, lists $85 for a 60-minute deep tissue and $115 for ninety; their own booking page says by appointment only. Beau Monde West Spa is $130 for the deep-tissue hour and $175 for ninety, and they're dark on Mondays. A mile east of us on Tyler, SunJoy Massage Spa names $70 for its deep-tissue hour — the same as ours — and takes walk-ins too.

What does firm pressure mean here?

Enough that the therapist is working through a layer of muscle instead of sliding across the top of it, and not so much that you're gripping the table. Deep work is slow work — an elbow or a thumb settles into one spot and waits there while the tissue gives, which is why a deep-tissue hour covers less ground than a light one and why nobody can do it at speed.

You are the dial. Say more, or ease off there, out loud, as many times as you need; nobody takes it as criticism, and the therapist would far rather hear it at minute ten. If you catch yourself bracing, holding your breath or curling your toes, the pressure has gone past useful and the muscle is tightening under the hand instead of letting go. That's the moment to speak up rather than be polite.

The myth

The more it hurts, the better it's working.

What the evidence says

The NCCIH puts the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy as low, and notes that where serious side effects have been reported they have tended to involve very vigorous techniques, or people already at higher risk of injury. Read that as the reason to say something the second pressure stops feeling productive — the hour goes better once you do.

The spots people mean when they say deep tissue

Four of them, over and over. The ridge of the upper back and the top of the shoulder, where a bad week ends up. The strip between the shoulder blade and the spine — a narrow gutter nobody can reach on themselves, and the one place almost everyone can point to with a thumb from memory. The hips and glutes, which nobody books for and half of west Wichita needs after a commute. And the calves, if you're on your feet all day or you've been adding miles ahead of the Prairie Fire Marathon on 11 October.

Name two of those when you get in and the therapist can plan the hour backwards from them. Ten hours overhead on a wing panel at one of the two big airframe plants leaves a different shoulder from eight hours at a monitor, and both leave a different one again from a Saturday shift on your feet at NewMarket Square. Our desk-work page goes further into the monitor version.

Should I book 60 or 90 minutes for deep tissue?

Sixty if the trouble is in one region, ninety if it's in two. Firm work eats time: an hour asked to cover a locked upper back and tight hips ends up shorting both. Ninety minutes at $90 is where most people who come in specifically for deep pressure settle after a first visit.

Half an hour at $40 is a real option when the whole problem is one shoulder and you have somewhere to be at seven. Two hours is $120. The session-length guide prices all four lengths against each other, and the full body massage page is the canonical price list for every one of them.

Adding cupping to a stubborn back

$20 on top of any session. The cups pull rather than press, which some people prefer on an area that hasn't budged under hands, and they leave round marks for a few days. The NCCIH says cupping may help reduce pain, that the evidence for that isn't very strong, and — the practical part — that the origin of the marks should be explained to your health care provider so they aren't mistaken for signs of physical abuse. Salt stone is $20 and aromatherapy $10. Our cupping guide covers how long the circles last.

Is deep tissue massage safe?

For most healthy people, yes. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says physical approaches including massage therapy are generally safe for healthy people when they're performed appropriately, and that people with medical conditions and people who are pregnant may need to modify or avoid some of them. That's a one-minute conversation at the front desk, and it's the reason we ask.

Who's working on you

Kansas has no state massage license. The City of Wichita licenses at city level instead — Chapter 3.55 of the city code requires a business license and a therapist permit for every therapist, both renewed every two years, and every working therapist carries a city photo ID card. Ask to see it any time, here or anywhere else in town. The NCCIH tells guests to ask about the training, experience and credentials of the therapist they're considering, and our guide to Wichita licensing spells out what's on the card.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk in any day from 9:30 AM — we close at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 PM Friday and Saturday. Of the fourteen Wichita studios that state a policy at all, ten take appointments only, and it's largely the same ten charging $120 to $130 for the hour. Both national chains sit up N Maize Rd at NewMarket Square, and neither takes walk-ins.

A walk-in policy isn't a held slot, so call (316) 347-6999 before you drive over and ask what's open. Weekday evenings after 5:30 fill first, and a ninety-minute session late in the day needs more runway than an hour does. You can also book online, or read the walk-in page for how to time it.

Getting here

Kellogg (US-54/400) west to the Maize Road exit — that's where the freeway section ends — then north about a mile and a half to Central. Turn west and we're a couple of hundred yards down on the north side, in the strip by Chili's and the Walmart Neighborhood Market, across from the Dillons. From the north: K-96 or 21st Street North to Maize Road, then south past NewMarket Square about two and a half miles to Central. We're on the north side of Central, just west of the intersection. The whole menu sits on the services page, and one tap gets you turn-by-turn directions to 10646 W Central Ave #106.

Before you book

Deep tissue questions

How much is a deep tissue massage in Wichita?
At Diamond it's $60 for 60 minutes and $90 for 90 — the body massage rate, with nothing added for pressure. Half an hour on one problem area is $40. Elsewhere in town, Under Pressure publishes $85 for a 60-minute deep tissue and Beau Monde West Spa publishes $130. The full body massage page has every length priced out.
Is deep tissue the same thing as a firm pressure massage?
Here, yes. Both mean the same booking worked harder and slower, and you get it by saying so at the start rather than by picking a different item off the menu. If you want firm on your shoulders and light on your legs, that is also one session — the therapist changes pressure by area, not by product.
Is deep tissue massage supposed to hurt?
It should feel like work you would choose — a solid, warm ache you can breathe through. Bracing, holding your breath or gripping the table means the pressure has gone past useful, and the muscle tightens under the hand rather than letting go. Say so the moment you notice. Mid-session is the right time; a review a week later is not.
Will I be sore the next day?
Some people are, mildly, for about a day after firmer work, and most often in a spot that was already tender. Water and a warm shower are the usual advice. Tell us next visit and we will take that area lighter. If soreness is sharp, spreading or getting worse instead of better, see a doctor about it rather than booking another session.
Do I need an appointment for a deep tissue massage?
No. Walk in any day from 9:30 AM — we close at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. Ten of the fourteen Wichita studios that state a policy take appointments only. A walk-in policy is not a held slot, so call (316) 347-6999 before you drive over and ask what is open.
Can I add cupping or salt stones to a deep tissue session?
Yes, on top of a session you have already booked — none of the three is bookable on its own. Cupping is $20, Himalayan salt stone is $20 and aromatherapy is $10. Cupping leaves round marks for a few days, which is expected and worth planning around before a wedding or a pool day. More on the marks.
